Olmec mask, Mexico c 1200 - 400 BC
Green schist.
On custom black steel mount.
The Olmec were Mesoamerican people whose heartland was located in present-day Mexico from 1200-400 B.C. They excelled in creating fine greenstone sculptures (eg jadeite, schist). The almost life-like quality of this mask belies the hardness of the green schist stone from which it was made.
Although it has been rendered in a naturalistic style, the face itself is not fully human. Rather, it is an idealized composite that alludes to the supernatural: the almond-shaped eyes, slightly downturned mouth, and wide, prominent nose are traits commonly found in depictions of Olmec otherworldly beings.
The use of drilling is also evident in the mask, particularly at the corners of the mouth and eyes. Olmec artists may have carefully placed the drill marks as guidelines for the sculpture, to determine the placement of facial features and to demarcate the depth of the carving. Many of these holes may have been preserved in the finished sculpture for aesthetic effect. Despite the concave depression, this mask was not made to be worn on the face, at least not by the living. Unlike the earlobes, which feature small holes, neither the eyes nor the mouth have been perforated for sight or breath.
Measurements: 11.25” height (on mount), 7.25” height (mask alone), 6 7/8” width

Dogon carved wood crocodile granary lock.
Mali, first half of 20th century.
On custom blackened steel mount.
The artistic heritage of the Dogon people of Mali is primarily sculptural and anthropomorphic. Most Dogon objects in the western world are sculptures rather than masks, as masks are highly important in Dogon society and are not usually sold to westerners. Even secular items (e.g. granary doors and locks, headrests, house-posts) are endowed with iconographic designs that bestow benedictions upon the user or owner.
The last image is an example of a Dogon carved wood granary door and lock from The Metropolitan Museum c. 16th - 19th century to illustrate how these such locks would have been used. These carved wood doors protected the window-like opening into each family’s grain storage building, usually a high quadrangular granary around which the house was built.

Carved wood painted robin by Frank Finney.
Originally from South Africa, Frank Finney (b. 1947) moved to Cape Charles, Virginia at age seven and grew up surrounded by wildlife in and around the Chesapeake Bay. He has been carving and painting wood for most of his life. Renowned for his realistic decoys as well as his whimsical folk art birds, his sculptures are highly coveted, prized for their accuracy and charm. We fell in love with the cartoon quality and personality of this robin, his eyes with their slightly surrealist quality reminding us of a Dali collage.

Striking and ghostly, we love how this Han Dynasty figure almost appears to float from the surface upon which she is placed.

Dom Hans van der Laan solid bronze candlestick.
Amstelveen Chapel, The Netherlands c. 1960s.
Dom Hans van der Laan believed in the totality of design in the spaces he created and attributed just as much importance to the design of individual objects. He had a hand in every single detail present in his buildings: furniture, linens, bible covers, plaques, tiles, new families of fonts for stone encryptions, even monastic robes. Most of his altar ware and candleholders were made by Utrecht gold and silversmith, Jan Noyons (1918 - 1982), in accordance with designs van der Laan.
Noyons was one of the most important gold and silversmiths of post war Holland. Not a passionate form innovator but extremely precise about the finishing of items, he practiced the craft in the way it had already been carried out for centuries, as an artisan. Most often Noyons was no more than the executor of van der Laan’s ideas, although they always discussed the designs together beforehand and in some cases also reached agreement about adjustments to the form of the design. Small items like this designed by van der Laan are extremely rare, the reason being that most churches regarded them as too sacrosanct to sell.

Dimensions: 11.5” width, 3.5” depth, 14.75” height
About Dom Hans van der Laan (1904 - 1991):
Dutch Benedictine monk, architect, and leading figure of the Bossche School, Dom Hans van der Laan developed a new vision for architecture from within the confines of the monastery, completely uninfluenced by discussions in the world of architecture and design.
Not perceiving the golden ratio to be relevant to the field, van der Laan developed a theory of the ‘plastic number’, which he developed over decades by methodically studying the rhythms, rules and proportions found in nature. The mathematics of beauty.
Approached from a philosophical, theological and technological perspective, his architecture and furniture examines the primeval origin of architectural principles and the fundamental essence of the form. On both a theoretical and practical level, van der Laan sought to give significance and importance to simplicity. A voice to silence, a form to the void.
If van der Laan’s innovative work is characterized by an all embracing simplicity, numbers are the only decoration present. These numbers govern all formal choices and establish a relationship between the parts but, once used, disappear without a trace, leaving only the invisible harmony that permeates.

Large Hans Hokanson wood sculpture, titled ‘Hermaphrodite’.
New York, early 1970’s.
Solid walnut.
Measurements: 50” height, 39” width, 30” depth (approx.)
Provenance: From the collection of fashion designer, Carol Horn.
About the Artist: Hans Hokanson (1925 - 1997) was born and raised in Sweden before moving to the United States in 1951, settling in Northwest Creek, New York. Hokanson was originally a painter but the expansive forest surrounding his home inspired him to begin working in wood. He collected huge pieces of elm and walnut from stumps and fallen trees. His early carvings were machinelike assemblages that evoked cogs, spindles, and wheels. These developed into more organic forms, which coincided with his move to the Hamptons in 1967 where he discovered fallen elm and walnut from trees on his property. Hokanson's work is represented in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Smithsonian American Art Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, Storm King Art Center, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and others.

Frederic Mares Deulovol (1893-1991) patinated bronze gazelle doe.
Base signed in the casting: F. Mares; with impressed foundry mark: Fundicion R. Vila / Valls (Tarragona).
Bronze base has been removed for photography and because we feel the doe stands more beautifully in a room without it, though it could be simply placed back on matching bronze base if desired.
This doe comes form a California estate where it was kept outdoors, partially covered. The resulting patina and verdigris is beautiful and reminiscent of a Pat Steir painting. The bronze is beautifully sculpted with incredible, life-like details, from the slight movement of the tail to the deep gaze of the eyes.
