Signed, with original box (tomobako) and original lacquered bamboo water container.
Excellent condition with no cracks or breaks, strong lacquered surface.
About the Artist: Tanabe Chikuunsai is one of the most noted basket families in Osaka and wider Japan. Chikuunsai II, though trained under his father, made a departure towards more modern forms. He had his first exhibition in 1925 and was widely awarded for his work after that, including the Osaka Prefectural Arts Prize in 1959. In 1981 the Japanese government awarded him the Fourth Rank Zuiho-sho.
