A very rare and early Kanak ceremonial war club from New Caledonia.

The majority of these clubs have broken beaks or beaks that have been repaired. This excellent example is completely original with no repairs. The patina is deep and rich, honest and real. We love the very straight staff and the skillful carving which gives the piece a heroic quality. This piece dates to the late 19th century with excellent provenance.

On custom bronze stand.

Last quarter of 19th century, New Caledonia. From the collection of Henri Louit (1846 - 1905).

Frederic Mares Deulovol (1893-1991) patinated bronze gazelle doe.

Base signed in the casting: F. Mares; with impressed foundry mark: Fundicion R. Vila / Valls (Tarragona).

Bronze base has been removed for photography and because we feel the doe stands more beautifully in a room without it, though it could be simply placed back on matching bronze base if desired.

This doe comes form a California estate where it was kept outdoors, partially covered. The resulting patina and verdigris is beautiful and reminiscent of a Pat Steir painting. The bronze is beautifully sculpted with incredible, life-like details, from the slight movement of the tail to the deep gaze of the eyes.

It’s very rare to find a Navajo blanket in this wonderfully rhythmic cube pattern. We also fell in love with it for its subtle variations and shifts in color. The wool has been dyed using only natural dyes.
