Ivory Sori Yanagi Elephant stools by Kotobuki c. 1950s

Ivory Sori Yanagi Elephant stools by Kotobuki c. 1950s

$4,000.00

Two ivory Sori Yanagi Elephant stools by Kotobuki, Japan c. 1950s.

Molded impressed mark of Sori Yangi and Kotobuki on underside of larger stool, original stickers on underside of smaller stool, as was always the case with each of the different sizes.

Originally designed by Yanagi as a work chair for his studio, the stool was released by Kotobuki a couple of years later after the company developed the technology for producing glass-reinforced plastic (fiberglass). The design quickly became known as the Elephant Stool because the form evokes a stylized trunk when viewed head-on.

It’s common to find examples that have had holes drilled into them for drainage, given the stools were popular for use outdoors. These two examples are both completely untouched and in beautiful condition.

Kotobuki was the first ever manufacturer of these stools, they were later made by Habitat and are now made by Vitra but are quite different as they’re made in molded polypropylene plastic.
