Claude Conover (1907 - 1994, American) mixed his own stoneware clay and invented his own unique way of constructing his pieces using slabs of clay and plaster molds to create two matching hemispheres which he would join together before covering the whole surface in a custom-made white slip. After the piece hardened he added texture and pattern with his own handmade tools and bisque-fired slay rollers.
He said little about his art, it was a subject he refused to discuss, the others being religion and politics. “I do not believe the artist should try to make a profound statement or explain his work. The object must speak for itself.”
His work can be found in museums across the country, including the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, The Cleveland Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, DC.

Frederic Mares Deulovol (1893-1991) patinated bronze gazelle doe.
Base signed in the casting: F. Mares; with impressed foundry mark: Fundicion R. Vila / Valls (Tarragona).
Bronze base has been removed for photography and because we feel the doe stands more beautifully in a room without it, though it could be simply placed back on matching bronze base if desired.
This doe comes form a California estate where it was kept outdoors, partially covered. The resulting patina and verdigris is beautiful and reminiscent of a Pat Steir painting. The bronze is beautifully sculpted with incredible, life-like details, from the slight movement of the tail to the deep gaze of the eyes.
