Ernesto Canto de Maya was born in Ponta Delgada, Portugal. He studied art in Lisbon, Paris, Geneva and Madrid, and was the most internationally recognised Portuguese sculptor of the first half of the 20th century. Canto da Maya was one of the precursors of figurative modernism and his aesthetic was both original and decorative. He created sculptures in Paris and Lisbon – large groups, terracotta and plaster figures, busts, reliefs, metaphorical figures from the cycles of life or femininity – with an anatomic expressiveness and poetic ideal.
