Early Isamu Noguchi Akari Light Sculptures, Model 41S
Isamu Noguchi Akari light sculptures. Model 41S.
Noguchi’s Akari series was started in 1951, model 41S was designed in 1956. This is an early model, marked with iconic red sun and moon ideogram.
This rare model was marketed in early Bonniers publications as the 41S; the shade model would become known as the 30A and the bamboo base was later known at the BB1.
(Bonniers was the pioneering New York department store founded in 1911 on Madison Avenue which earned its reputation for its pace-setting selection of Scandinavian, Bauhaus-influenced, and Italian modern furnishings, tableware and lighting. It was the first US distributor of Akari and held the first international exhibition of Akari in spring of 1955).
